Monitoring California's MPAs
The Monitoring Enterprise leads the development and implementation of MPA monitoring to evaluate the effectiveness of the new MPAs being established under the California Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA).
Our work begins after the MPA planning process is complete, during the regulatory review period, to ensure monitoring can begin when new MPAs take effect. We start with planning MPA monitoring. When monitoring planning is nearly complete, we shift to implementing monitoring. The Monitoring Enterprise does not collect monitoring data directly; rather we lead the implementation of monitoring data collection through partnerships with U.S. and California agencies, researchers, citizen-science groups, and others. We also lead analysis of monitoring data and reporting of monitoring results to inform MPA management decisions under the MLPA.
For more information on the MPA planning and adoption processes, see the California Department of Fish and Game website.
